The country has had several transitions between military and civilian rule, (many of them through bloody coups) and endured a civil war from 1967 until 1970. Currently led by President Olusegun Obasanjo (who also ruled as a military leader from 1976-79) under a democratic constitution adopted in 1999, Nigeria has been blessed with mineral resources the most lucrative being the Petrochemical sector with Nigeria being one of the world's largest oil producers. Other resources are Coal and tin. Agricultural products include groundnuts, palm oil, cocoa. However over dependence on petrochemicals has led to neglect of its agricultural sector.
Bad leadership in the past both military and civilian and huge corruption have led to mismanagement of its resources and a failure to develop or maintain its infrastructure. In addition there have been issues of civil liberties. Current leadership has however tried to reform the system with some success.
Tribal, religious and regional rivalries, issues over the distribution of oil wealth and destructive petrochemical mining operations in the oil rich delta regions have been divisive.
In addition, several states have adopted Islamic law which has caused serious divisions, and led to riots, murders and the exodus of thousands of Christians from these states.
Issues to pray for
- Pray for the Leadership to be able to steer the right path and course for the country
- Pray for a change of heart in the nation from selfishness and corrupt thinking to righteousness and love for our fellow man.
- Pray for peace, the advancement of the gospel and the destruction of strongholds especially in the north.
- Pray for economic breakthrough and the lifting of the curse of poverty in the nation as a whole.
