What is Christianity - Part 2

Jesus preached that men should repent of sin and turn back to God. He knew he had to be killed to atone for the Sin of man and he knew how and when this would occur. Many people believed in and followed him. But others were jealous of him and hated him for telling the truth about their wickedness and hypocrisy. Others disbelieved in him because they expected him to lead a rebellion while instead he preached righteousness and repentance - deliverance from the captivity of sin which ensnares all men. Eventually, the very people he had come to save instigated and provoked their Romans rulers to seize and kill him by crucifixion on a cross, a punishment usually reserved for thieves and rebels. Three days later, he arose from the dead (Resurrection) and appeared to many of his followers for a time before ascending to heaven.

He gave his followers instructions before he departed. His followers were scattered for a while but later regrouped and demonstrated the miraculous power from God. They were called Christians. Later it became understood that the message of salvation (The Gospel) was not for the Jews only, but for all mankind.

The summary of these instructions and the teachings of other great men from God along with the history of the Jews from the time to Adam as forbearers of the gospel are summarised in the bible for us believers to follow as our way of life. The words of the bible are God given words and carry power to change lives, heal, deliver etc.

Jesus has also through the Holy Spirit given his followers and believers the power to do the same things he did when he was on the earth such as healing the sick and other miraculous things besides these.

Because Jesus died for our sins, no one can be saved from the punishment of sin unless they believe in him, and acknowledge the sacrifice he made i.e. unless we accept him as our saviour, we still have to bear the punishment for our sins i.e. eternal damnation and separation from God.

Summary:
  • God created the heavens and earth and all life.
  • God loves man but all mankind is naturally sinful, separated from God by sin
  • It is impossible to overcome sin by our own efforts or pay the price for sin by doing good things.
  • Jesus is the Son of God. He appeared on earth as a man born of a woman but with God as his father.
  • God had to send Jesus Christ his son to save mankind and restore mans relationship with him.
  • The only way to do this was for Jesus to suffer the death penalty to pay the price for our sins.
  • Jesus was whipped, tortured, crucified and died on a cross at Calvary, and placed in a tomb (burial cave).
  • Three days later Jesus arose from the dead and walked on the earth appearing to many of his followers and having fellowship with them for a period.
  • He then ascended to heaven having given them a commission (instruction) to tell others of the sacrifice he made.
  • All men have sinned. We can only be saved from the penalty of sin by turning away from sin, accepting that Jesus has paid the price for our sins and making a personal commitment to follow and obey him can. This is God's free gift to all mankind and is available to all who accept it.
  • The bible contains Gods instructions to mankind.
  • By believing it and following it we please God. This includes living a life of integrity, humility, right living, kindness, good works, fellowship and praising God. But the starting point is acceptance of the salvation that is found only in Christ Jesus.
